WikiArt’s primary goal is to make world’s art accessible to anyone anywhere. WikiArt already features 150.000 artworks by 2.500 artists and localized content in 5 languages. These artworks are currently located in museums, universities, town halls, and other civic buildings of more than 70 countries. Most of these art pieces are not for public viewing. We are planning to cover the entire History of Art – from cave painting to modern private collections.
Inspired by Wikipedia, WikiArt was supposed to become fully nonprofit project with users donations as the only source of financing. The reality is that donations cover less than a half of hosting expenses. So we added banners and links on the web site selling reproductions of artworks but still only a quarter of current development expenses can be covered.
Also, many users keep asking for new iOS application since author of current WikiArt app is not able to support it anymore.
Future development of WikiArt project depends on its ability to earn about $4000-5000 per month to cover current development expenses. So we need either 4-5 times (to reach 4mln visitors per month) growth of traffic or to add some premium features.
